Off grid photovoltaic systems are completely independent of the grid. The energy produced by the solar panels are collected and stored in special batteries that are rechargeable. A device called a charge controller regulates the raw DC power to prevent overcharging and protect the batteries. Batteries store energy in the form of Direct Current, therefore another device called an inverter is used to convert the DC power to AC power so your appliances can use it.
